Terry,

We fished last Thurs, thru Sat, the first time I have not stayed with your lodge in the past 6 trips to the lake.  I want to say the accommodations, staff, boats, and food were all first class.  Although the numbers were down from previous trips about 70 to 80 fish a day for our boat, the size of the fish was much better.  Our guide Jesus knew the lake and where the better fish were, and also was a great guy besides.  He also saved some really good holes for the last day, and we caught big fish in all of them.  We had our best fishing in the morning and evening on top water, and Senkos, jigs and lizards any time of the day off the points when the wind blew the fish bit.  We hit one big flat hump 3 days in a row two or three times a day and would see 3 to 7 pound fish cruising looking for Tilapia.  It was one huge dinner table for the fish.  Of the 220 or so fish we caught we had 70 to 80 fish 3.5 to our largest 6.9 and most were 4 to 4.5 clones.  The top water bite the last night before dark was like nothing I have ever seen in 35 years.  We caught 25 fish in the last hour and had 4 to 5 pound fish fighting over your Sammy if was even in the water 5 seconds you would have fish blasting it.  The largest that night was a 6.9.   It was incredible.  Great time I will definitely be back to your lodge.

Sincerely,

John Huscroft

ur 1st morning was slow by Huites standards as we adjutments were made for post-spawn fishing. We then started fishing a productive pattern that produced countless fish in the 2.5 to 5 lb range. There were many smaller fish and enough larger fish to keep it intersting. My buddy Ron's largest was an 8 lb and I caught a 10.2 lb. These were huge females who had already spawned.

Morning and evening topwater bite was good for the first and last hour of the day. White flukes and small crankbaits were VERY effective following the morning topwater bite. As the day heated up we fished deeper with large crankbaits, swimbaits and texas rigged plastic. Senkos and spinnerbaits played a role in rounding out the action.

Wow!  What great fishing - just what Huites is supposed to be all about.  Some days, it's a little slow, but when it's hot, it's red hot!

Aaron Gore with a group of four who flew in Private to Choix called after the trip saying he was skeptical of the reports he had been reading, only to report that the fishing was actually better than the reports and offerred to talk with anybody that wanted the facts about Lake Huites and Lake Huites Lodge. The fishing was just fantastic. some days catching over 200 bass in a day.

Vernon Grizzard's group of four, who flew in in their private jet, on the last day reported excellent results, with multiple 6, 7 and 8s, most on topwater.  And of course, using big Senkos and 6 inch swimbaits.

Gale Goodman's group of ten just reported 10 lbers caught this morning by some in their group, topwater and Senko fishing excellent, all boats catching between 70 and 80 fish per session.

It was great to get back on the water at Lake Huites, the most beautiful lake in Mexico. Just as the lodge had been reporting, I got to experience some red hot action.  It seems as though numbers of fish could be caught almost anywhere on the lake.  I personally had my best catches up the Rio Fuerte.  Topwater action even in the middle of the day sure was a lot of fun.  We are having plenty of fish caught, some boats catching well over 150 per day, with a lot of small fish but we have seen plenty of 6, 7 and 8 lb. fish with a few 10 lbers that we haven't seen with any regularity since 2002.  Fran Drexler from Pennsylvania reported catching more 5 lb fish than he could count.  His group of six all reported the same type of results.  Ronnie Wilkins' group of four all caught fish at rates unheard of for a couple of the novices in his group. It is just amazing the numbers of fish from one end to the other at Lake Huites.  With our new private service into Choix, it makes Huites much more acccessible.  Although we are sold out for the remainder of February, we have room Spring Break week in March and we hope to see you down there!

Group of 14 anglers from Japan fishing the 18th to the 24th had excllent results fishing topwater only with fish up to 9 pounds

Aaron Gore who flew private into Choix.......reported 150 fish days for the boats in his group topwater and swimbaits

Vernon Gizzard just now on the water already have great results on topwater

Abolutely fantastic numbers. Manuel reports several quality 4 to 7 lb. bass but with still lots of 1 and 2 lb. bass.  4 inch Senkos and Yumdingers worked best up in Canyon No. 3 with spinnerbaits and swimbaits producing the best fish near the Aquarium and the Las Cruces area.  A couple of fish caught between 8 and 9 1/2 lbs., all caught on chartreuse flukes.

From the Lodge Jan 10th Narlin Salazar reports excellent rattletrap bite with many fish in the 4 to 6 pound using 3/4 oz firetiger rattletrap. Action is very fast right now and canyon number 3 producing the most action and Las Cus holding the bigger fish. Watermelon. Watermelon/red and Christmas tree color 6" lizzards the best Plastics

From the Lodge Jan 16th  to the 21st The Wright Brothers reported over 150 fish for the boat today. 1/2oz Chrome/blue rattletraps working excellentin the canyons Big fish 8.1

The Wright brothrs fished 5 days caught a total of 6 fish over 10 pounds with the big fish 13.0 with great numbers of 4 to 5 pound bass caught all over the Lake

Terry Hughes fishng last week report fishing as good as he has seen it at Huites. The Hughes group are fish counters and averaged over 260 a day per boat with one day catching 311 for one boat and unreal quality compared to previous trips.

Terry Hughes says  " Thanks for the best  trip ever to Lake Huites"

Brain Morgan I fished at Lake Huites a total 14 times over the last 9 years. Lake Huites Lodge is without a doubt the nicest Lodge on the lake with the best trained Guides.I just returned from the best trip ever to the Lake. I caught a total of 9 fish over 9 pounds with one over 11 pounds and numbers where to many to count. Countless numbers of 3 to 5 pound bass. Terry,

We just returned from another great trip to Lake Huites.  This was our best yet.  As usual the accommodations were excellent , the staff was friendly, and the food was great.  We really appreciate the great work that Narlin does as camp manager, and that Manuel does as head guide to put you on fish.

Now for the fishing report…  A few disclaimers: I admit, I have read through some of these reports thinking ‘that can’t be true’.  Let me assure you it is.  The fishing is so good here; there is no need for exaggerated fish stories!  We use tally counters to make sure we keep an accurate count and typically weigh every fish over 5 pounds, as we have friendly bets going among our group.

There were four of us.  We had the lake all to ourselves, and our understanding was that it had not been fished in a few weeks.  It had rained for three straight days before we arrived, so the lake was pretty muddy.  Our first day, both boats in our group caught 101 and 102 (a slow day by Huites standards).  You can get spoiled pretty quick fishing in Mexico.  We caught some good fish, but 50 - 60% were less than a pound (dinks).  We were a little worried that it was going to be a slow bite throughout the trip.

The next day the fishing picked up to about 150 per boat.  The highlight of this day was when we had a great topwater bite in the middle of the day.  We had about an hour stretch where we pulled in a bunch of 3 to 6 pounders on chrome chugbugs.  They would only hit it standing still on a slow retrieve, but they were killing it!  My brother-in-law and me caught back to back 6 ½ pounders. Mine exploded on the bait like a peacock bass, and his jumped completely out of the water and came down on top of the bait.  I have never seen anything like it.  Other than that exciting run, the topwater bite was slow.

The next day we were determined to find the big ones.  One of the boats decided to only fish deep holes (20 to 30 feet).  Those are hard to find without a graph, but these guides know the lake so well it doesn’t take long to find the “honey holes”.  On the 3rd day, the size of fish increased dramatically.  We did another 150 per boat with hardly any dinks caught.  A ¾ ounce, white spinner bait is what did the trick.  We were working up one bank where I caught four, 5 pounders in a row.  They absolutely mangled the spinner bait, so bring plenty of extras.

Our last day of fishing, I will never forget.  We continued on the pattern of fishing deep holes with swim baits, lizards, and spinner baits.  We had a good morning of fishing, and we were looking forward to a lunch on the lake shore.  We had about two hours to kill before lunch, so we decided to get out of the sun and fish up one of the canyons.  We were pitching towards the banks with sinkos catching dinks, but meanwhile my brother-in-law was still working in 30 feet of water fishing a spinner bait on the bottom like a worm.  All of the sudden, I hear him yell out “NEW HONEY HOLE!”  We proceeded to catch 3-6 pounders on just about every cast for the next 2 hours.  My dad caught 48 fish on 48 casts, and that was before he started counting.  We were fishing 5” storm swim baits (bunker color).  Cast it out, let it go to the bottom, start reeling and you had one on.  We caught fish up to 8 and ½ pounds in that spot.  My father-in-law was casting a swim bait that was so chewed up, it was basically a hook and weight, and he was still pulling in fish on nearly every cast.

We then had our lunch on the shore with an incredible view of a waterfall off in the mountains.  Fresh fish and hand cut fries.  What a great time.  The staff really made my dad feel special on his birthday.  The fish sure cooperated too!  We went back to the same spot and for 3 hours, literally caught one on every cast until it was time to head back for camp.  One boat ended up with 276 for the day, and the other boat was not far behind that number.

The hot baits were 5” Storm swim baits (bunker); ¾ ounce white spinner baits; watermelon and pumpkin seed lizards; watermelon candy Flukes, Senkos; tequila and junebug worms; and chrome chugbugs.

I can’t wait to come back next year.

Thanks again,

Neal Ford
